What We Are About and What We Hope To Accomplish
Sounds simple enough, what we are about and what we hope to accomplish is to reach a broader base and educate more people about what is and what can happen to American horses if horse slaughter is allowed to come back to the U.S. (it's still in Canada and Mexico). We are hoping to get more people involved in the horse rescue process and support for a horse rescue, of your choice, on a local level so that they can continue to save horses going to slaughter or abused/neglected cases.
Is this simple - No! But, we are determined!
Just a little information before you look at the other pages. I do not run a rescue, I do volunteer at a rescue, I do have horses and the idea of slaughter sickens me. All rescue links are rescues that have asked to be here so they are easy to find in one place. I am not soliciting donations from you or for anyone, it's your responsibility to verify any organization that you are willing to assist. Horses are expensive to care for and when they are starved and cut up it adds to the costs of a rescue to get the care needed to save the animal and prepare them for a better life. So, yes, horse rescues are always in need of money and new adopters.
Slaughter is ugly and inhumane and you will find that people will try to make it sound pretty by calling it processing or many other names. It's what it is - slaughter.
Yes, horse slaughter is done in Canada and Mexico. There are people in the U.S., called Kill Buyers, that stay at auction barns, and will come to your house or by any other means to get the required number of horses needed for a haul to slaughter. Hauling to slaughter is horrific, abusive and brutal because the drivers don't care about the health or safety of horses.
Also, you are going to hear how slaughter is good because it brings more jobs to town, eliminates abuse/neglect, gives an outlet for unwanted/old/crippled/starving horses and numerous other excuses. Well, it simply doesn't supply very many jobs to the area where a plant is. There are people who are going to abuse animals no matter what sources are available, and the Kill Buyers aren't looking for old/crippled/starving horses. In my opinion, there is no such thing as an unwanted horse. Someone had a Stallion and a Mare that they put together to produce a foal, they had to make some plan of wanting a foal. Okay, even if the two got together by accident, yes it can happen, the owner should be responsible for the well being of the foal. If you don't want to have a foal on the ground then get the stallion gelded.
In closing, all of this is about education, responsibility of ownership, and support of rescues. Will you help? Learn more, share the information, volunteer/donate to a rescue of your choice. Please help save horses from slaughter.
